Great place for no-frills down to earth homemade ice cream. It's similar to a Ben & Jerry's, but not as pretentious. The flavors are great and there are plenty to choose from. They have a small seating area with small table the kids (50 lbs or less as the chairs are clearly labeled) will enjoy. The prices are a bit higher than expected at $4 for a single scoop.

The ice cream is homemade and let me just tell you how delicious it is. The ice cream is just the right amount of sweet with creamy texture. The price is great as well. For $2.49, you get a big scoop. The interior is pretty cute. Hand painted cows and cute spots all over the creamery. A must try location if you're wanting to experience the homemade ice cream and price that comes along with it.

More like 3.5 stars. Good ice cream and shakes. However, the shakes are around $6 a piece (even though the board said $5 and my total for two shakes as $12 something) and not worth the price. I'd say maybe $4 would be right. And nobody uses Nestle Quik mix in their shakes, or even give you that option! What's up with that??

Super friendly and local home-made ice cream shop! You can definitely tell that quality ingredients are used, and the ice cream is not too sweet. There are so many chocolate flavors to choose from and some interesting seasonal flavors as well. As other have noted; the prices are kind of steep, but still the same as any ice cream chains. I do not understand why people think that local should cost less.

This place has the best ice cream I have ever tasted! The customer service is fantastic! I wanted to get a banana split with some whacky flavored and I was guided through flavored to compliment what I like and what would be a tasty match along with toppings to go with each flavor. Best customer service I've ever had at an ice cream place! We will definitely be back. Soooo delicious!

Don't bother. Not sure what all the good reviews are about. The workers couldn't care less about their job or customer service. They mislead you by saying there's 48 flavors but they only have maybe 5 to sell. The workers just seemed happy that they didn't have to do anything when I left. I agree with the guy who said this place is a joke, because it is.

First and only visit. Too expensive for the Small portion sizes. Flavors I got were tasty but were so small, it's totally not worth it. About two golf ball size scoops in a small cup for $4. Looking from the side of the cup you would've thought it was empty. Flavors seemed to be BR copycat too. Not a fan. Service was good though, girl who helped us was very friendly.

Local friends took us here while we were in town visiting and I'm so glad they did. Staff is super friendly, the store is adorable, and the ice cream is delicious. They allow for sampling, though that certainly doesn't make the decision any easier. House-made flavors run the gamut from traditional ones like vanilla and mint chip, as well as more complex and "modern" ones with chocolate-covered pretzels and the like. I'm a traditionalist, so while I did sample around, I settled on the butter pecan which was amazing - not too sweet, nice and buttery. Definitely recommended!

Not sure I'm still a fan. They made a change to the strawberry ice cream, my favorite flavor, and now it tastes nothing like what it was. Now I'll have to drive all the way out to Candy Kitchen in Madeira Beach to get strawberry ice cream.

My brother and I like to come here whenever we have a sweet tooth. He likes the Cookie Monster ice cream with the superman ice cream and I like the cherry ice cream. It tastes a lot creamier and smoothies than store bought ice cream and I definitely like that it is homemade. The place is quaint and friendly. Staff is nice and always welcoming. I haven't tried every flavor but most of what I tried I liked. Their prices are decent. I'd definitely recommend this place for post-dinner dessert dates/hangouts.

  • James E.

The service here his exceptional and you can really taste the difference between non homemade ice creams.

  • Leigh C.

Good stuff! Real ice cream made on site by the owner. There are some fro-yo options, too, if you're trying to save the calories! Lots of mix-ins to add to your milkshake, sundae, etc. Very casual place that would be fun for kids because it reminds me of an "old school" ice cream spot instead of the more trendy options you see around town. We'll be back!

  • Jan S.

Somewhat costly for ice cream. Decent selection of flavors and average tasting ice cream, parking can be tough and I'd like to see more cleanliness. Not saying it is unsanitary, but lighting and paint would do a lot to give interior a better perception of attention to detail and housekeeping.

If you enjoy biased and obnoxious servers come here! They had the nerve to charge extra (9.95) for my ice cream compared to the same selection before me (6.95) down to the T. The inappropriate and immaturity of this tore away what could've been a good snack, had it been appropriately priced. Make sure you have extra cash.

    (1)
  • Todd Y.

Ice cream was pretty good, but $5 for a single scoop cone seemed a bit steep to me I don't think I'll be back based on that alone the service was friendly though the other problem for me is that they claim "Home made" but when I asked "So you make it here?" The girl said no. I said so how can you claim it's home made? Her answer was "Well they make it somewhere! " Not really the intelligent answer I was hoping for at all. Overpriced and lies ta boot

Stopped in again on May 24 and still no soft serve - I guess they don't plan to get it fixed and don't care that there are some families that want both. They have a huge sign in chalk stating NO Soft serve at this time. I guess I will just never know about their ice cream as we left again.

My grandfather was in the ice cream business when I was a kid, and this ice cream is a great reminder how good real ice cream tastes. I have been taking my son there since he was 8, he's 26 now and we still go. It's a family tradition....

    (5)
  • Petra M.

It's okay. Many of the flavors I've tried were over sweetened. Too much sugar in their recipes. Hard to appreciate the nuances of the cream and special flavors. Sugar bombs. Great variety overall. There's the inconvenience of cash only in a virtual money world- And it's pricey for what you get.

Great ice cream! Is it the BEST in Florida? No. Olaf's still holds the number one spot - for now. Is it one of the best in St Pete though. When I review ice cream places, the question always is, "is this better than anything else I can just buy in the grocery store?" The answer here is no, but what makes this place still one if the best is that they put a lot of stuff in their ice cream - i.e. they put a lot of cookies in their cookies and cream; they put a lot of chocolate chips in their chocolate chip ice cream, etc. so that's Why I gave it 4 stars. Also, They have all the traditional flavors you'd expect and some non-traditional ones too. They have a few tables and chairs inside so you can actually sit for a minute to enjoy your frozen treat instead of having it melt at soon as you walk outside.

First time here on the recommendation of friends. Amazing selection, the staff was so helpful, and the ice cream was rich and amazing. Bring cash and your sweet tooth!

  • Alayna A.

Dee-licious and lots of options to choose from, only wish it were just a bit less. More than $10 for 2 ice cream cones seem a bit much to me.

    (4)
  • Dan T.

The ice cream is excellent and our server, Nina, was super helpful. We would come back in a heartbeat.

  • SallyCinnamon C.

So many flavors, good luck choosing just one. Stopped in after a Lightning game last night when our friends said they wanted milk shakes. I was stoked to discover something seasonal called "Not your mama's pumpkin ice cream" ... Wow! The server told us that the owner makes the ice cream himself. Smaller children's table and chair set makes it a cute place for kids and families as well.

  • Loreal D.

Stopped by this place on my way home, and was exactly what I was looking for. The prices are a little steep like other reviews said, but the quality is good enough for the price. A few things to note about this place is that they are: CASH ONLY and they have more of 35 Flavors than 45. I think they only make a certain amount of flavored per day and if they sell out, they sell out. Though, 35 flavors is still a lot to choose from. They have all of the regular flavors and popular kids flavors like superman and cookie dough. My favorite flavor is the raspberry chocolate. It has raspberry chocolate pieces in a chocolate ice cream base. So yummy!

  • Tricia W.

We love this place. I don't go too often, but when I'm craving ice cream, this is the only place I'll go. They have a ton of selections to please any palate, although i find myself always going for the chocolate peanut butter brownie. I mean, does it get any better than that? No, it really doesn't. However any ice cream that I've tried has been awesome. And I've definitely tried a lot, thanks to their heaping samples. I've found that many times with hand-dipped ice cream, there tends to be a lot of ice chunks in the ice cream itself, and that just totally ruins it for me. But not here. The ice cream is delicious and the owner is pretty great. Her husband makes the ice cream daily and she runs the store. Her staff is always polite and pleasant. Just remember though that they are cash only, so make sure you have some before you go get tempted and kick yourself!

I mean, if you think about it, all ice cream places deserve 5 stars unless all they have is something like pistachio banana ice cream. It's ice cream. Baskin Robins and such places would get 4 and home made would get 5. However, in an effort to differentiate a bit, I'll go with 4 because I still think Big Olaf's is the best in the area. But this place is good. They have lots of flavors and sundae and even a blizzard-like treat. Girlfriend and I split a scoop of cookies and cream, and I have to admit, it was wonderfully cookie-full and very creamy. My only problem with this place is that the high school girls they have working there are a bit aggressive. As we walked in (and other people after us) one of the girls asked literally before the door even closed what we wanted or did we need more time. Ummmmmm, I just walked in and while you don't know I've never been here before, how many people walk into an ice cream store and order before they even look at the flavors? Here's an ice cream customer service tip - when a person walks in say "hi, welcome to ...., just let us know when you're ready and we'll be happy to help you." Then let the customer peruse your flavors and when they look up, ask them what they would like. Heck, wait until they at least get to the counter. Otherwise, I will certainly be back. Dying to try one of the blizzard treats with some of their delicious flavors.

Great ice-cream, but someone should call the IRS on them for an audit since they only accept cash. What an inconvenience. It's 2014, who does cash only now a days?

    (3)
  • Allen U.

Fantastic ice cream! Four stars for two reasons...1. It was the most expensive ice cream I recall having. Two kids cups each with one scoop and two adult two scoop cups was $17. 2. They don't accept debit or credit cards! I almost never carry cash so that's a bit of a bummer but otherwise its excellent homemade ice cream.

  • Joey S.

Nice little place, cool looking on the inside and there is an apartment upstairs. They have very good ice cream I liked it. They are unique.

    (4)
  • Holly B.

Too expensive and poor customer service. Also, there are very few seats inside which forces us to sit outside on busted almost breaking wood benches. Ridiculous!

  • Acelyn B.

NUMBER ONE RULE: CARRY CASH! Unfortunately, that's the only reason I docked a star from their rating. Granted, I should have known better to bring along cash to a local spot. We had to leave and go to a bank because there was no ATM inside either. HOWEVER, as long as you got dolla dolla billz, this ice creamery is where you should go for dessert! With 48 home-made flavors, it could be a difficult decision. The staff is friendly & quite helpful, though. Don't be shy to try any flavors. I ended up with a single scoop mud pie: coffee ice cream, fudge, and oreo cookie crumbles. Single scoop is an understatement. That is ONE LARGE scoop. Obviously, I'm not complaining. And that was probably the best coffee ice cream I've had. Ever. Oh, and the place itself is tres cute, barn-style. Makes it feel more comfortable/friendly/family-ish, I'd say.

Best Ice cream in St. Pete! CASH ONLY though! so be prepared. they always have fun experimental flavors of the month. I want to try them all. Not the cheapest ice cream in town but the best. No soft serve here or splits just scoops on scoops on ice cream.

  • Carey F.

Best homemade ice cream option St Pete! My favorite is the Mocha Almond Fudge. The building is really cute, but would be better if there was a legit outdoor seating option.

  • Alex O.

I've driven by this place for years, always wanting to try their ice cream and even stopped in one time to be disappointed by their "cash only" sign. Today I finally had the opportunity (and the cash) and I was not disappointed. I had their Cookie Monster flavor and it was delicious. My mom and girlfriend were also with me and I sampled their ice cream too, both were equally delicious! Fast and friendly service as well. I took one star away for the lack of tables (2 and a half) and cash only payment option. Had the ice cream not been phenomenal I would have taken two stars off but it really was that good lol. I would definitely come here more often if they had debit and credit payment options. All in all, great ice cream place!

  • Nina B.

Really yummy and fun flavors! I've only been twice and I've tried toasted marshmellow and cookies and cream...YUM!!! I get the 1 scoop cup and it's plenty. It's decent priced too! 3 cups of 1 scoop ice cream is about $12. And they are very decent scoops! I definiteky recommend this place! Only downside is I wish they had more seating, it gets a little crowded sometimes.

best homemade ice cream ever! definitely recommended!

  • Nat W.

This is a cool old fashioned ice cream shop! They have 48 flavors all home made. Who would not appreciate that? The staffs are very nice. Don't be shy to ask for tasting. I ordered Rum Raisin and Maple Walnut. They were both rich and creamy. Very very bad for my diet! It was double (M) in a cup for $5 but it was too big for me. Should have picked a single. By the way, even if you order a single, they will put 2 flavors for you! My husband was fascinated by the old gum ball machine they had inside. For 25 cents, you can see a gum ball sliding and jumping around in the big machine. When you are craving for good ice cream, this is the place to go!

What's the perfect panacea to a dreadfully mediocre pizza lunch in Sarasota ? Why, it's stopping for ice cream on the way home at the little red barn on 4th Street. I've avoided this place for a couple of years now....can't explain why I felt this way, but it just didn't look like a special place for ice cream. I can admit I was wrong on this one. Friendly, helpful staff that clearly likes to share their remarkable selection with people; I get the feeling I could ask for an infinite number of samples and they'd never lose patience. And why would they ? These folks are making fistfuls of cash day in, day out. I mean, FISTFULS.....it's not cheap. Standouts have been the Peppermint (not just for the holidays, ya know?), Strawberry Cheesecake (with huge chunks of pie crust throughout, just delicious), and their version of Moose Tracks. Today we tried the infamous Cookie Monster, which makes your tongue blue and therefore, makes you feel like a kid again, if only for 10 minutes. I'm tight-fisted in handing out five star reviews, and this place would do well in getting rid of the kiddie gumball machines and others to make more room on the inside, there's generally nowhere to sit and I like to take my time with it. Still, this truly is a St. Pete institution that shouldn't be missed and that isn't overrated.

How can you miss the big red barn on 4th Street?! One of the things I miss most about moving out of St. Pete is no more late night stops to Old Farmer's Creamery. The ice cream is homemade and they offer around 50 different flavors. The staff behind the counter are always so friendly and encourage you to take your time picking your flavor. They are extremely helpful and will assist your decision making process with free samples. If you like peanut butter they make this awesome warm peanut butter sauce that tastes wonderful on chocolate ice cream... we tried ours on rocky road! I deducted one star because they are cash only. My husband and I are slaves to our debit card and have had to split an ice cream because we weren't carrying enough cash on us for two ice cream cones.

  • Heather B.

Yum yum yum! This is out favorite ice cream spot. There are so many choices and one full case of brown (chocolate) flavors! I always try new flavors and switch it up. My husband - the chocolate raspberry EVERY time! CASH only. No credit cards!

  • Bill B.

Delicious! The ice cream is great and they have tons of flavors from salted caramel to superman and smurf. Highly recommend.

I got really excited when I was driving past a giant barn saying "Homemade Ice Cream". So, I returned to Old Farmer's Creamery after dinner and I was really happy I did. The girls working were super nice and allowed us to try out some of the new flavors before setting on one. I ended up with Chocolate Peanut Butter... I always want to try a new flavor but default to it! I will definitely visit Old Farmer's Creamery every time I am in town!

  • Casey H.

Not a lot of parking but I wasn't there to eval the space. Very good selection of ice cream. I would recommend the chocolate and peanut butter on one scoop. Follow that up with a double chocolate chip scoop and top it all off with chopped almonds. Yum! OH - They don't take credit cards.

This mom-and-pop ice cream shop, despite its cash only policy, is well worth a visit. Not only are you supporting a local business over the various ice cream chains, but they have good ice cream! My default flavor is their fudge chocolate, but they typically also have a tasty monthly option (the last one I tried was pineapple upside down cake, and this month is a spiced pumpkin). There typically seems to be only one sorbet option for the lactose intolerant, but the one that I've tried (apple) is sweet and crisp and well worth a try. In addition, they offer a large variety of toppings as well as floats, splits and sundaes. It's a great place to take the family, and the younger kids will also love the candy machines. It might not be the best ice cream ever, but I give it two thumbs up.

Very good ice cream. Not to expensive I can walk there added bonus for me and the hubby

  • Karimah K.

I absolutely love this place! I recommend the smurf ice cream, which is my favorite. The place is small but clean and the staff are always in a good mood and don't get upset when you want to try 10 different flavors (there's just so many).

After visiting the Old Farmer's Creamery (after years of driving right past it), last night - I'm absolutely SHOCKED that there is only 1 review on yelp. We visited last night (Friday), and the place was PACKED. I mean absolutely packed. There are two entrances, and a lot of chaos. But the ice cream girls were terribly friendly to young and old alike and we felt like we weren't at home (because really, what family treats you THIS WELL!?)! Joking aside, the service was terrific, despite the seeming confusion. It felt as though we were a bunch of lost cattle, just roaming in circles trying to find the ice cream we wanted, which is ironic since cows wouldn't eat ice cream, and ice cream comes from cows, but yet we felt like cows.... Hmmmmm....! Anyway, we were, surprisingly, served very quickly and the ice cream was well worth the price ($6.77 for a cup and a 1 scoop waffle cone). There were 4 cases of flavors, ranging from Smurf, cookie monster and Superman to Maple Pecan, and chocolate Thin Mint... It was so busy we didn't want to bother for samples, so we shall return another time to try something a little more daring. For the time being we settled with cookies and cream, and chocolate thin mint (both were delicious!).

  • Jeff S.

Love it. They make all their own ice cream and yogurt, albeit not in the shop. The flavors are great and the chocolates are my favorite. The problem is they have SO MANY FLAVORS!! Last time I was there, I counted over 40 flavors. They'll let you sample as many flavors as you'd like, and they never bat an eye. You can even get a double scoop with two different flavors. Best ice cream parlor in St. Pete, hands down. BEWARE: they only accept cash!

    (4)
  • Megan T.

How many times in a year can you go and they continue to tell you, "oh sorry, but our chocolate soft serve is still broken." .... But the vanilla still works??? Yea, I'll go to Dairy Inn from now on. Not worth the crappy service and the refusal to fix machines....

    (1)
  • Pyra-Danny V.

A barn-looking, red building with cow prints and ICE CREAM in big words? Say no more. This ice cream business sticks to a whimsical country-feely look inside. Through the counter there are many buckets filled with the creamy stuff and chalk boards declare the MANY different combos and variations you can order. The staff was quick to help me decide on a regular strawberry cheesecake flavor based on my answers to their questions. Delicious, creamy, thick-- not too icy-- with some homemade love. I'll have to return because they rotate flavors based on the season and what they can get their hands on. Typical prices-- around $3-$4 for the good stuff. Remember-- cash only.

LOVED THIS PLACE!!!! We were driving through the area looking for local ice cream, did a yelp search and chose this stop. The family loved it! Great little farm house with fabulous and unique flavors. Ice cream was so yummy! Service was awesome too. Very patient and helpful. Flavors are organized in the freezers. Will definitely go out of our way to stop in again.

If you've read my other reviews, you'll find a consistent theme, I truly enjoy the dairy goodness that is ice cream. Thus, I am happy to report a new find for all of the other ice cream fanatics out there in Central Florida. This Mom and Pop shop has oh-so-many flavors and concoctions to choose from! It almost made our heads spin. They home make their hard selection and you can tell. I sampled their banana pudding and it was heavenly. I ended up choosing a Marshmellow Caramel Sundae (for $3.20) and was extremely pleased with my choice. They do use quite a bit of whipped cream so if that's not on your list of favorites, you might want to ask for a reduced amount. Plus, the soft serve that composes their sundaes is low-fat so I didn't feel as bad enjoying every single bite. They also offer a generic version of DQ's Blizzard called the Hurricane. For $3.05 expect a ginormous portion of soft serve ice cream blended with almost every single candy, cookie, fruit and topping that you could imagine. I tasted the Peanut Butter Hurricane with vanilla soft serve and was astonished at the amount of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups I encountered in my 2 measly bites. Plus, to add excitement to the already glorious Hurricane, they drizzle just a smidge of Peanut Butter Sauce on top. They are big enough to share if you go on a fairly full stomach. Make sure to shake your piggy bank before going though, they only accept cash.

Great ice cream, the inside could be a little nicer, but the ice cream is what matters. I didn't like their little joke about "freedom vanilla" (instead of french vanilla) - what was France's great crime again, not wanting to go to war in Iraq? The horror.
